Course Description

This course provided attendees the opportunity to be educated regarindg patients who have undergone total laryngectomy and their communication options. Notably education will be provided regarding who is a good candidate for utilizing tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis for communication. Additional discussion will involve how SLPs and ENTs collaborate to maximize this complex patient population’s successful communication.

Elements of Competence

Interview of the combined staff among UW-Madison speech language pathologists and identified a need for education in enhancing and improving communication in complex patients who use tracheoesophageal voice prothesis for communication following total laryngectomy.

Objectives

As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to:

1. Explain how a tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis compensates for altered anatomy in order to restore speech following total laryngectomy.
2. List three patient factors that indicate strong candidacy for TEP.
3. Describe one common TEP complication and how ENT/SLP collaborate in finding a solution.

Method of Participation

The estimated time to complete this online activity and exam is 1 hour(s). To receive credit, a passing grade of 100% is required on a short online quiz. You will have opportunities to retake the quiz to achieve a passing score. After you have completed your exam and evaluation you will be able to automatically print your credit letter.
