Effective Communication when Working with Individuals with Dementia - Disclosure

Course Description

This course provided attendees the opportunity to learn about the impact upon communication at various stages of dementia. Attendees learned strategies to enhance communication and various barriers as they work with patients with dementia and their family members.

Elements of Competence

Interview of the combined staff among UW-Madison speech language pathologists and identified a need for education in understanding the various stages of dementia and impacts upon communication along with strategies and challenges in efforts to improve interactions

Objectives

As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to:

1. Describe how different stages of dementia affect a person’s ability to understand, process, and express language.

2. Identify communication techniques that enhance interactions with individuals living with dementia.

3. Explain common communication barriers and demonstrate appropriate, empathetic responses to reduce frustration and improve connection.

Method of Participation

The estimated time to complete this online activity and exam is 1 hour(s). To receive credit, a passing grade of 100% is required on a short online quiz. You will have opportunities to retake the quiz to achieve a passing score. After you have completed your exam and evaluation you will be able to automatically print your credit letter.
