Dysphagia After Cardiac Surgery: Incidence and Improving Outcomes with Prehab - Disclosure

Course Description

This course provided attendees the opportunity to learn about cardiothoracic patient populations who experience post-operative dysphagia. This course covered the potential risk factors for developing dysphagia and the benefits of pre-operative therapy in these patients.

Elements of Competence

Interview of the combined staff at the UW-Madison Voice and Swallowing Clinic in Madison, Wisconsin, and identified a need for education in the area of patients who have had cardiothoracic surgery and experience post-operative dysphagia, notably potential risk factors for developing dysphagia and the benefits of prehabilitation in these patients.

Objectives

As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to:

-Describe the incidence of postoperative dysphagia in cardiothoracic patient populations and implications for clinical practice.

-List potential risk factors for post-operative dysphagia development in cardiothoracic patient populations.

-Identify potential benefits of implementing pre-habilitation approaches preoperatively in cardiothoracic patient populations.
