This course provided attendees the opportunity to learn about pharyngeal muscle sarcopenia and it’s impact on swallowing biomechanics and function. Attendees also learned how protein consumption and exercise impact muscle development.
Interview of the combined staff at the UW-Madison Voice and Swallowing Clinic in Madison, Wisconsin, and identified a need for education in pharyngeal muscle sarcopenia and nutrition, notably protein consumption as both relate to the impact on swallowing biomechanics and function.
1. Describe the concept of pharyngeal muscle sarcopenia and how it impacts to pharyngeal swallowing biomechanics and function
2. Identify swallowing exercises that activate and exercise the pharyngeal muscles
3. Associate the link between protein consumption, exercise and muscle hypertrophy
