This course provided attendees the opportunity to learn about the role of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in communicating patient needs and goals of care with loved ones and medical staff. This course will demonstrate how speech language pathologists play a critical role in the interdisciplinary team and utilize AAC to effectively meet patient needs.
After this course, learners will be able to:
1. Describe the benefits of using AAC supports during goals of care conversations as pertains to the patient, medical team, and facility.
2. Identify reliable assessment strategies when determining the patient’s ability to participate in goals of care conversations.
3. Explain appropriate communication supports to aid the patient in participating during these discussions.
4. Identify supports for the medical team when generalizing communications skills, weaning SLP involvement.
